Hi! I'm thinking of apping a Mage-type character, and I just want to ask about some details:

1) Does the Mage Guild offer basic weapons training, like how to use a staff for more physical purposes than spellcasting, or is it just something a Scholar/Mage is supposed to figure out on their own?

2) Are all Scholars and Mages allowed to know or receive casual/informal weapons training - just things friends would and could casually share with one another (like how to use a dagger, or how to cast a basic spell), and nothing class-restricted or too technical - from other Job classes, and vice-versa?

3) Are there any specific or expected styles of weapons and armor training for each of Ivalice's three regions?

4) For first-tier classes, are Blue Mages the only mages who aren't physically weak, or are White Mages and Synergists included?

5) Are Scholars and Mages allowed to have jobs, whether part-time or full-time, that aren't guild-specific or related (like selling wares, or repairing vehicles, etc.)?

1) To a degree, yes. Any senior mage with that knowledge (a Red Mage for example) could train a younger scholar/apprentice.

2) As long as it's logical and reasonable it's likely we'll allow it. If you want to run a particular idea by us, you can also shoot us an email just to be certain.

3) If you want to do some individual world-building, and say, for instance, a particular village or small region is focused on a particular style, we're definitely open to this. Emillion itself however, and the surrounding area, is very diverse in this case.

4) You could, potentially, have a white mage or synergist that isn't "physically weak"/has self-defense or a reasonable degree of weapons training, while keeping in mind their strengths, focus in study and overall limitations.

5) Absolutely. Magical study does not need to encompass the entirety of their lives, and for those not wealthy or nobles, it would be natural for them to seek out a reliable source of income.

I do have an idea about #2, which I'll send by email. Just some follow-up questions:

* Are occupations along the lines of 'waitress' or 'cook' acceptable for someone in the Mage guild?

* Which spells count as first level spells, and are we players allowed to choose which ones and how many we have?

The mages guild has no hard restrictions regarding what professions are and aren't acceptable. However, as some of the mages guild consider themselves the elite, as they house powerful knowledge far above the "average person", some may look down on someone working in such professions. This doesn't mean they'd be shunned or anything just that some people may be snooty.

Which spells are regarded as "first level" depend on which Mage class you're interested in. For example, first level spells for a black Mage would be things like fire, ice and thunder to name a few. For a white Mage things like cure, blindna and poisona would be acceptable. A scholar going down the mystic path would be likely to pick up things like blind, slow and fog as examples.

However, we're not looking to lock players into only having specific spell lists and abilities and everyone to have the exact same abilities and skill levels. As long as good reason can be given for something we're willing to consider it as long as it's not too far a reach. Like a scholar knowing ultima would be unacceptable. Regarding the number of spells you're allowed to have we just ask people to be reasonable again, no character at game start will know all the spells and all levels of those spells. We'd love to see room for every character to grow both in powers and in personal plot/emotional and relationship development.
